Moms, Daughters and Sons

There was a young man that paid me the highest honour you could bestow.  He is from India.  He told me that they call the elders, DaDa in the Indian culture.  I was speechless it stunned me and I was humbled beyond belief.

I served my country many years ago with distinction and honour.  Served in two branches, Untied States Air Force and the Untied States Army.

I served in Combat never left my post.

I have been a Father to my children for 50 yrs.

I have been a Husband for 50 yrs.

I never left my post.

I have been a Grandfather for over 20 yrs.

I never left my post.

I held a young man in my arms years ago as he was dying.  There was nothing I could do to save his life.  The confusion of battle became silent around me as I held him.  I can still hear his voice he was calling out for his Mom.

I told myself if it was in my power to save a life, I would do everything in my power to save a young person’s life.

It takes a Father a Grandfather to care to tell their children to be all they can be, “Failure is not an option”.  Encourage them to climb the mountains to new heights and never second guess themselves.  Don’t become like the rest of the world.

I have received many awards and even letters from Presidents.  But this young man paid me the highest honour he paid me respect.  Sometimes that is what life is all about.

I will take that to my grave,DaDa, when I get buried in the city of my Fathers.

    1. And dignity lost words in an oceans of confusion and turbulence for these young people, children all of them. We sit on the council of Elders with Honour and Dignity we know when to laugh, we know when to cry but we always pay respect where respect is due.

  1. My grandparents taught us when we were old enough to understand. It was not difficult, we sat quietly when the adults were in the room. It stays with me to this day. To sit quietly with my elders and listen to them, to hear their stories of old, the stories that will be lost to the next generation, if no one just sits and listens.

    1. That is so true. I used to listen to my wife’s uncles they used to bootleg alcohol from Mexico with burros across South Texas and other stories of old it was fascinating.

  2. It is so interesting, it was life. My relatives lived through the dust bowl , the dirty 30’s, in the Dakotas. We do not know those kind of trials. It was hard living for them. But they made it through it all, to tell the stories to those who will listen.
