Should we fear the Lord when we have Christ? Let’s take a look Deuteronomy 4.1-9 the Jewish nation was coming out of from being exiled for 40 years in the wilderness. They were sent to wander for forty years for disobeying the Lords word . Moses was told to speak to a rock and it would gush out water . Instead he struck the rock twice with his staff and for this he never entered the promised land. He to went against the word of the Lord. Because he was the shepherd of the people , Moses had to pay a higher price for his disobedience so he was not allowed to enter the promise land. So are we called to obedience to the Lord? (Num. 20:6-12)
Let’s take a look. Duet.4:1-2, The Lord is exhorting the Israelites to listen to the statue and judgements. The Statues are the moral dictates and the judgments are the social law. Duet. theme is “Hear and Obey”. The Israelites were also cautioned about changing any word of the law. However men could not obey the law. So God sacrificed His Son, Christ, to relieve us of the burden of the Law by faith men escape condemnation. We are unable to keep all the law. So are we not to obey the Law?
We now look Duet.4:3-6.
vs. 3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baal-peor: for all the men that followed Baal-peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.
The Israelites saw the destruction of Baal-peor. The Lord destroyed all the gods and the men that followed them. Worship of idolatry , images of men or women, the sun, the moon, the heavens are not to be practice. Judgement will follow.
vs.6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
We know the Ten Commandments they are written in our hearts. . This is your knowledge and wisdom in the Lord, your riches. Moses is talking to the Jewish people and the Law is in our hearts.
vs.9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;
Take heed is found three times in this chapter. The Lord is telling us to pay attention. Our eyes have seen the writing on the wall. We are to keep the commandments in our hearts and teach our children so they can teach their children.
Since we are to be grafted into the tree of Judea as christians. I know the unrighteous will not enter heaven what about the righteous that turn their eyes?
So the question remains should we fear the Lord or take heed to what He tells us?
