1: And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
2: And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3: And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
4: And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
5: And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.
Chemosh was the god in the region that the Israelites camped in. Chemosh was the national deity of the Moabites whose name most likely meant “destroyer,” “subduer,” or “fish god.” While he is most readily associated with the Moabites, according to Judges 11:24 he seems to have been the national deity of the Ammonites as well. His presence in the Old Testament world was well known, as his cult was imported to Jerusalem by King Solomon (1 Kings 11:7).
Chemosh seems to have also had a taste for blood. In 2 Kings 3:27 we find that human sacrifice was part of the rites of Chemosh. This practice, while gruesome, was certainly not unique to the Moabites, as such rites were commonplace in the various Canaanite religious cults, including those of the Baals and of Moloch.
Mythologists and other scholars suggest that such activity may be due to the fact the Chemosh and other Canaanite gods such as the Baals, Moloch, Tammuz, and Beelzebub were all personifications of the sun, or of the sun’s rays. They represented the fierce, inescapable, and often consuming heat of the summer sun.
(1)So the chosen, by the Lord, are engaged with the gods and goddesses that the city of Shittim worshipped. That is what it means to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
(2)The people did eat is a figurative expression just means they consumed all the ideologies of the gods and goddesses and bowed down to them. Sin has away of buckling your knees.
(3)Baal worship simply represents the dark and depraved side of human nature. For example, Baal Peor was the god of sexual license, and represented the sexually depraved inclinations of man’s nature. Molech was the Baal of child sacrifice. Sexual idolatry will always kindle the anger of the Lord.
(4) In this verse it means identify everyone whose mind, (mark of the beast) worshipped the beast (Baal-peor). Sun is referring to their bowing to a sun-god and committing sexual fornication with each other.
(5) The judges of Israel are the Council of Elders that conducted everyday affairs in the camp. Death is the end result of sin.
It is interesting that the sexual depravity exists in America today . Child sacrifice is simply abortion. Men lie with men, women lie with women and men have sex with animals. Not much has changed since the times of the ancients every kind of sexual idolatry exists in America.
The elect christians are no different then Israel only a remnant that worship the true God will survive when Christ comes back for His Bride.
Remember God loves you and wants you to come home.
